CYCLING IN THE HIMALAYAS: MANALI - LEH - KHARDUNG LA PASS

RIDE 300 MILES + CLIMB UP TO 18,380 Feet

IN THE MYSTICAL INDIAN HIMALAYAS

Delhi – Manali - Leh – Delhi

Join us to experience the magnificent Himalayan mountain range by cycling through the lush green valley of Manali to the arid high mountain deserts of Ladakh. Our journey takes us through small villages along beautiful rivers. We reach our final destination, Leh after a grueling 300 miles, climbing 5 - high mountain passes and crossing numerous streams!

The highlight of our trip is riding our bikes to Khardung La (18,380 feet), high motorable pass.

DELHI to MANALI

Our adventure begins with a road trip to Manali, which is a 13-14 hour drive. Dinner will be enroute at a roadside dhaba (roadside restaurant)
ETA to reach Manali is by 8:00 am the following morning.

MANALI/SOLONGNALA - MARHI

We arrive in Manali/Solangnala and check-in to our hotel to freshen up. Cycles will be provided to participants, who choose to rent and this will be the time to assemble cycles, who choose to bring their own. We will go on a short ride to test our cycles. 

After lunch we head out on a tough 22 miles of ascent to Marhi. The road will wind through alpine vegetation. As we gradually ascend along the mountain, we will see awesome views of the Manali valley below.

MAHRI - KEYLONG

The first part of today's ride will be to ascent the final 9 miles to Rothang Pass. We will ride our bikes through walls of ice as we ride across the pass. Hindu culture changes to Buddhist culture after we cross the Rothang Pass.We will pass beautiful Buddhist Stupa's along the way.

KEYLONG - PATSEO

As we leave Keylong, we will leave civilization behind and enter the land of the Lamas. We will see white dots of sheep grazing on the mountains. In the horizon, we will see snow covered peaks of the higher Himalayas. Today is moderate ride to our camp grounds of Patseo

PATSEO - SARCHU

Today our resolve will be tested as we start our climb from Zing Zing Bar climb and cross Baralacha La Pass, which is at (15912 fts/4850 mts) above sea level. We will pass the beautiful lake called Suraj Tal, before we reach Baralacha La Pass. We descend down to the valley of Sarchu and camp overnight. We will cross from Himachal Pradesh to Jammu and Kashmir

SARCHU - WHISKEY NALLA

Today is one of the most demanding day on our trip. We start our ascend from the Sarchu plains. Gata Loops are a series of twenty-one hairpin ends leading to Nakee La Pass (15552 fts/4740 mts). The climb become even more memorable with stories of the local legend - ‘Ghost of Gata Loops’  Keep a lookout for Bharal, the Himalayan Blue Sheep and the elusive Snow Leopard.

DEBRING - RUMPTSE 

Today we climb on an almost non existent road to Taglang La Pass (17481 fts/5328mts), which is the second highest motorable mountain pass in India. The climb to this pass is demanding and challenging. We will use caution to along this 16 mile/25 kms decent to Lato town. Riders are required to descend together for safety

WHISKEY NALLA - DEBRING 

Our day starts with ascending the second highest pass on our trip, 

Lachalung-La Pass (16664 fts/5079 mts). We willl descend to Pang Nalla followed by an ascent to the top of Moore Plains. We will encounter gravel and dirt roads. The Moore plains are home to the nomadic Changpa tribals, native herdsmen of the Ladakh. The Moore plains are summer pastures for their herd of goats, sheep and Yak.

RUMPTSE - LEH 

We will start to experience the Buddhist influenced Ladaki way of life as we ride through several small towns. We will ride past several monasteries and Buddhist Stupas. We will pass Karu, which  is an army settlement enroute to Leh, one of the largest on the trip. We will reach Leh town after a climb of about 8 miles/12 kms.

LEH - KHARDUNG LA 

Today we will push our limits by ascending about 3000 ft to reach Khardung La pass (18380 fts/5603 mts). Reaching the top of Khardung La is a once in a lifetime experience. We will stroll the markets of Leh in the evening followed by a celebration for the successful completion of our adventure.

LEH - DELHI

After breakfast, we will get to the airport to catch our flight to Delhi. This is about an hour long spectacular flight flying over the Himalayas. 

 

In Delhi, we will say our goodbyes to our team, till we meet again for the next big adventure.

We arrive and meet at Delhi International Airport and will be transported to the Hotel. Evening will be spent in the final preparation for the adventure.
